Pain Control
Though there can be many side effects associated with cancer and its treatment, pain is the most common—and the most feared. As with any medical treatment, a cancer patient will most likely experience some kind of chronic or acute pain. At Cancer Care Associates, we are dedicated to keeping our patients as comfortable as possible. That is why we want our patients to openly communicate with staff about any pain they are experiencing. Our treatment team is well-versed in the many forms of pain control available and can counsel patients on what methods will work best to help alleviate their pain.
In order to treat pain, it is important to understand exactly what pain is. In short, pain is simply a way of your body letting your brain know that something is wrong. Nerve cells on your skin transmit the senses of heat, cold, light, touch, pressure and pain up your spinal cord and into your brain. Pain can be mild and annoying or it can be severe and unbearable.
Pain is no longer something that a cancer patient must accept. Thanks to advancements in treatment techniques and medicine, various methods are now available to help alleviate discomfort. Pain medication can be given in pill form, as an ointment or patch, as a suppository or intravenously. Our care team works closely with our patients to determine which pain control method will be most effective. With these advanced pain control techniques, our patients are now able to enjoy life in a comfortable fashion.
